Background of the study

Nigerian English is marked by a rich tapestry of phonetic variations, influenced by the country’s diverse linguistic landscape. This study examines allophonic variation—subtle differences in sound production that do not change word meaning—in Nigerian English as observed in street interviews conducted in Lagos. Lagos, a melting pot of cultures and languages, provides an ideal setting to explore how speakers’ accents and pronunciation patterns vary in informal interactions (Ojo, 2023). The research investigates how allophones of key phonemes differ among speakers from various socio-economic backgrounds and linguistic communities. These variations, often influenced by indigenous languages, contribute to the unique character of Nigerian English and can affect listener comprehension and social perceptions (Babatunde, 2024). By analyzing recordings from street interviews, the study aims to document these phonetic variations and understand their underlying linguistic mechanisms. This exploration not only contributes to phonetic and sociolinguistic theory but also informs language teaching and communication strategies in multicultural urban settings (Folashade, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Although allophonic variation is a well-documented phenomenon in phonetics, its manifestation in Nigerian English within urban contexts like Lagos remains underexplored. Variations in pronunciation can lead to misunderstandings and affect social judgments, yet little empirical data exists on how these variations occur in spontaneous street conversations (Ojo, 2023). This lack of research hampers efforts to develop effective communication and educational strategies that accommodate regional phonetic diversity. Without detailed analysis, the influence of indigenous linguistic backgrounds on Nigerian English pronunciation is inadequately understood. This study aims to fill this gap by systematically examining allophonic variations in street interviews, providing insights into their communicative implications (Babatunde, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

1. To document the allophonic variations in Nigerian English as observed in Lagos street interviews.

2. To analyze the social and linguistic factors influencing these variations.

3. To assess the impact of allophonic differences on communication effectiveness.

Research questions:

1. What are the key allophonic variations present in Nigerian English?

2. How do social and linguistic backgrounds affect these variations?

3. What are the implications of these variations for listener comprehension?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides a detailed analysis of allophonic variation in Nigerian English, enhancing our understanding of phonetic diversity in urban contexts. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and communication professionals by informing strategies to improve pronunciation clarity and promote effective language teaching in multicultural settings (Folashade, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is limited to examining allophonic variations in Nigerian English based on street interviews in Lagos. It does not consider other urban areas or formal speech contexts.

Definitions of terms:

1. Allophonic Variation: The subtle, context-dependent differences in the pronunciation of a phoneme.

2. Nigerian English: A localized variety of English influenced by indigenous languages and cultural contexts.

3. Street Interviews: Informal, spontaneous conversations recorded in public urban settings.
